Alternate Means of Construction
This group of highly textured vessels served as means to explore large-scale, coil-build ceramics. Measuring eighteen to twenty-four inches tall and a departure from my typical wheel thrown work, this experimentation with coil building as an alternate means of construction opened the door to significantly larger scale and exploration of forms and textures with less definition and higher tactility. The external surfaces were left unglazed to preserve this tactility, amplified by the white grog within the black stoneware.
These pieces were constructed from a slab-rolled base, with coils of clay added gradually to form the walls of the vessels. As coils were added, my fingers were used to blend and smudge the clay, creating the texture seen on the pieces’ external surfaces.
