Mortar and Pestle 05
—
Wheelthrown from a dark brown stoneware clay body. Both components are unglazed.
Mortar measures 4.5” wide by 2.5” high. Pestle measures 3.25” long by 1.5” wide
Hand wash mortar and pestle with warm water and rinse thoroughly. Avoid using soap as it may leach unwanted flavors into the clay.
Season mortar by repeatedly grinding dry rice until powdered, and adding a small amount of water to create a paste. Repeat several times until powder and paste are white and grit-free. Rinse with water to remove any remaining rice.
Because this piece is ceramic instead of stone, it’s best used for grinding small spices, pounding soft foods, and emulsifying sauces. While the stoneware is durable, aggressive smashing can still lead to chips or cracks.
